The History of Creed

A portrait of James Creed 1760
James Henry Creed established the House of Creed in 1760

Creed was established in 1760 by James Henry Creed in London. Though the slogan “Creed 1760 DE PERE EN FILS DEPUIS 1760” and the introduction of Olivier Creed as a “sixth-generation master perfumer” might imply a grand history, Creed was originally a tailoring establishment! Back in the day, they produced high quality garments and became famous in the late 19th century dressing people like the arbiter elegantiarum at the time, Count d’Orsay. Queen Victoria and the Empress Eugénie issued them a Royal Warrant for clothes. However, it was not until the introduction of Creed’s popular fragrance Green Irish Tweed in 1985 that the company became known for exquisite perfumes and colognes.
Today, this privately-held company is based in Paris and managed by Olivier Creed. While it is unclear what scents were created by Creed for members of the English Monarchy, a quick look in the Royal Warrant register reveals that currently Creed does not hold a Royal Warrant from any member of the Windsor family. However, this does not matter since it is the cologne we smell–not the history!

Reviewing Creed Aventus

When creating Aventus, Olivier Creed was inspired by Napoleon Bonaparte and so he tried to use ingredients which had a connection to the emperor. He used birch of Louisiana, a state that was once ruled by Napoleon and blackcurrant from the Mediterranean island of Corsica – Napoleon’s place of birth. Since we received a small bottle of Aventus from Creed, we were able to enjoy the scent for the last month. The cologne itself has a slightly sweet and fresh opening that later develops into pleasantly woody notes with a subdued hint of vanilla. After about 6 hours on the skin, I cannot smell it anymore, but others sometimes still can. While I like the scent, my wife absolutely adores it.

Avents Creed 30 ml 1 fl oz

So far, I have been wearing it only during the winter months but I have no doubts it will also make for a good summer scent.

*Top Note: blackcurrant, bergamot, pineapple

*Middle Note: Louisana birch

*Base Note: moss, vanilla

Aventus is priced quite expensively; the 1 fluid ounce spray bottle retails at $140, the 2.5 fluid ounce flacon at $240, the 4 fluid ounce spray at $280 and the 8.4 fluid ounce glass jar at $370. All but the largest size can be ordered online from the Creed boutique. Alternatively, beauty encounter carries the 2.5oz for $220.

Altogether, I think that Creed’s Aventus is a good everyday scent, if you’re willing to pay the price.
