Take a sharp paring knife and a boot lace. Tie a knot at the end of the lace and use the paring knife to push it through the cork in the wine bottle. Once it’s through all the way, pull the lace slowly and the cork will pop out. If the lace comes through, just tie a bigger knot.

Always breaking the cork? Line the corkscrew up with the middle of the cork every time by lining it up from the side. Simply hold the corkscrew sideways so the tip is touching the middle of the cork. Stop paying a small ransom for the airplane-size liquor bottles mid-flight. They may not advertise it, but so long as you pack it according to FAA regulations, you can pack as many 50ml liquor bottles as you want and carry them on the aircraft. Then just accept the free soft drink, juice or mix and add your own alcohol to make a cocktail in the air.

  1. There are some great ideas here, and I plan on trying the tight shoes in the freezer trick, but if my neck is 17.5″, and my waist is 42″, how does my neck size tell me if pants will fit?

  2. Great list of suggestions – something for every gentleman here! If appropriate, I’ll offer two more: A very fine grade of sandpaper will also sand off stains on suede shoes without showing signs of wear. Also, oil stains (olive oil, etc.) on washable clothes can be removed by putting lighter fluid on the stain and rubbing it in before washing. Sometimes a second treatment is needed for severe stains. This works if the stain isn’t more than a day or so old. I don’t wear synthetics, but poly-cotton clothes seem to survive the procedure.
    Thanks for another useful article!

  3. I like the windex for the patent leather shoes . Ideal for my next Big Fat Greek white tie dinner .

  4. Hey – regarding bringing your own alcohol on airplanes:

FAA regs say “No person may drink any alcoholic beverage aboard an aircraft unless the certificate holder operating the aircraft has served that beverage to him.”

Seems to me you can’t bring your own stuff to drink on the plane (though it would be great).

    1. Thanks for that. In that case we will have to remove that from the article in a future update.

  5. Another great article!
#30, however, may not be legal. Flight attendants need to “serve” you alcohol — you can’t legally do it yourself. Some friendly flight attendants may be willing to crack open your small bottle and “serve” you. Some may not.
    Keep up the good work!

  6. Great ideas, but I am still confused about the waistband around the neck idea. To stretch shoes I place wet newspaper and then allow it to dry. As the paper dries it expands and stretches the shoes.

  7. The waistband trick could be better explained. Instead of opening the waist up as if you were going to slip your legs into the pants, the insides of the waistband must be pressed flat together, and then the outside of the waist (where the belt loops are) gets wrapped around your neck. My own pants just about meet around my neck, so the trick works.

  8. Great article.

Not sure about the waistband tip. I take a small tape measure with me when I go clothes shopping. A quick measure and a look inside the pants to see how much extra fabric is will tell me if the pants will fit.

  9. Deleting comments doesn’t make you look any less like a mad axeman or whatever it was. The problem is in the pic.

  10. One of my favorite articles and that says a lot with the quality you put on this site. I must say I could have used two or three of these in the last year.

  11. I have found that using Brasso Duraglit Metal Polish wadding will remove deep scuffs from patent leather shoes. Just rub the scruff with a piece of wadding, then wipe off. Apply again if needed.
