Preston has worked at The Gentleman’s Gazette since July of 2018. In addition to his most apparent work as one of the channel’s hosts, he also oversees the content production process by managing our scriptwriters, video editors, and virtual content assistants, leveraging the talents of everyone involved–and directly contributing himself–to shepherd each piece of content from initial idea to finished product. Additionally, he manages said teams in the completion of special projects, serves as a member of the leadership team, and crafts our newsletter emails.

Highlights of his special projects with the Gazette include reviving the Black Tie guide website as our specific content, participating in photoshoots with our entire team, and helping to organize and execute our recent Belvedere Bash.

Prior to joining the Gentleman’s Gazette, Preston worked in digital marketing and advertising for companies including a real estate firm and a Minneapolis-based ad agency. This background was helpful in that it gave him some familiarity with online marketing tools and infrastructure. He holds a degree in History from Gustavus Adolphus College, the focus of which was early-20th-century American popular culture. Beyond his particular area of expertise, the techniques he learned regarding archival research have served him well in combing through our library of vintage menswear publications!

An interest in Classic Style developed gradually in Preston. In his adolescent years, his grandparents introduced him to the music of their youth, primarily 1950s rock ‘n’ roll, which then led him to his true musical passion, early-20th-century jazz. From music, he then branched into films of the 1920s-60s, and the Golden-Age menswear on display got him hooked on Classic Style.

Preston’s particular competencies in menswear include understanding the Formality Scale and individual dress codes (e.g. Black Tie, White Tie, Business Casual, etc.); the chronological progression of stylistic hallmarks in garments (e.g. changes in lapel width or trouser fit over the course of the 20th century); and how to best leverage the principles of aesthetics (e.g. color theory or pattern matching) to create visually pleasing ensembles.

A lover of early jazz, in addition to collecting records by his favorite singers like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Preston performs with large and small ensembles as a jazz vocalist at local venues. If you’re in the Twin Cities area and would like to hear him sing, check out www.prestonsings.com for more information! Aside from musical pursuits, he has been a lover of superheroes (particularly Batman) from an early age. He also has a background in visual arts like drawing and painting, and he aspires to get into woodworking in the future.

Preston lives in the northwestern suburbs of Minnesota’s Twin Cities with his wife. They have been happily married since 2020.

Favorite Menswear Era1930s
Favorite FilmHard to choose! He loves pretty much anything from the Golden Age of Hollywood. When it comes to animation, his inner comic-book lover can point to Batman: Mask of the Phantasm as a favorite.
Favorite BookAlso a tough pick! The book he has re-read the highest number of times might be Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. He also enjoys nonfiction biographies of historical figures, the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the poetry of Robert Frost.
Style IconsFred Astaire has been his principal style icon for many years because of his effortless command of both formal and casual attire. He also looks to figures like Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra for inspiration.
Statement PiecesA vintage ivory double-breasted dinner jacket from Sam’s Tailor of Hong Kong, late-1930s and early-1940s Black-Tie and White-Tie ensembles, and his collection of vintage fedoras from the late 1950s/early ‘60s.
Go-To Fort Belvedere ProductsCollar clips, Edelweiss and Light Blue Veronica Persica boutonnieres, and striped cashmere-wool-silk grenadine ties
Favorite Gentleman’s Gazette ContentWould “Preston Schlueter Sings” be too obvious a choice? Aside from that video, he picks “How to Dress Like Fred Astaire,” since that piece was an outgrowth from the application video he submitted to earn his position at The Gentleman’s Gazette.
AspirationPreston hopes to someday sing with some of the world’s premier jazz and classical ensembles, like the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra or the Vienna Philharmonic –in formal attire, of course!
